Final Project Part One: Memory and Experience

This is the first phase of (and introduction to) your final project. We will devote three weeks to completing this project and I will help you as much as you need. These are the directions for part one, which will be corrected, improved, and revised as we proceed. Do your best to answer all of these prompts to the best of your ability. If you cannot answer a question, please explain why to the best of your ability. Honesty and clarity will be rewarded.

SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS:

  • Work for the entire period(s).
  • Do not use notes or materials from the past.
  • Respond to all questions using only your memory from course lectures, materials, assignments, and prior knowledge.
  • Use complete paragraphs and sentences.
  • Type this assignment. I prefer for you to use Google Docs, but you may use Pages or Word.

STEPS:

  1. Open a new document.
  2. Create a proper heading in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Number each of your responses.
  4. Type using 12-point font, Times New Roman.
  5. Double space your writing.
  6. Answer questions and respond to prompts.

PROMPTS AND QUESTIONS:

  1. What is The Holocaust? Write a brief history and description. Be sure to include who (which countries and cultures) were involved, a basic timeline, and what makes The Holocaust a significant event in human history.
  2. What is Vladimir Putin’s central message in his document entitled A Plea For Caution from Russia and why do you think he wrote this letter to America?
  3. What is tragedy according to Aristotle?
  4. What are the five traits of an Aristotelian tragic hero?
  5. According to the Crash Course lecture we watched earlier in the term, what is the basic story of Oedipus Rex? Write a summary of the play and why it fits Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy.
  6. What is Monomyth? Introduce the concept by writing about Joseph Campbell. Spend time writing about the stages that these heroes go through. Then, write about why The Hero’s Journey is significant across cultures.

WHEN YOU FINISH:
